The systems certification function of SLSI plays a vital role in promoting quality Assurance activities in all sectors of the economy and operates the following certification schemes.

Quality Systems Certification Scheme (ISO 9001)

The Quality Systems Certification Scheme is designed as per ISO 17021 to meet international requirements in certifying quality systems of organizations according to ISO 9001:2015 standard. This scheme is accredited for nineteen scope sectors by RvA, The Netherlands, which is one of the world renowned Accreditation Bodies and by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board (SLAB) for 22 scope sectors. Hence, the certificates issued under this scheme are recognized all over the world. This scheme is operated with the support of a strong in-house resource pool of Auditors who are fully competent, qualified, experienced and registered with IRCA-UK.

There are about 20 Lead Auditors and 65 Auditors currently attached to SLSI.

Environmental Management System (ISO 14001)

EMS certification is a voluntary certification scheme of SLSI which supports the industry to comply with the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard and to demonstrate company's commitment to environmental protection.

ISO 14001 standard does not set requirements for any environmental aspect such as emissions or discharges: instead organizations establish their own targets of control based on current performance data or to comply with regulatory requirements.

This scheme is accredited for 14 scope sectors by RvA, The Netherlands, which is one of the world renowned accreditation bodies and by the Sri Lanka Accreditation Body (SLAB) for 11 scope sectors. Thus the certificates issued under this scheme are recognized all over the world.

HACCP and Food safety management Scheme (ISO 22000 & SLS 1266)

Food safety management is another area where SLSI provides certification services to the industry and commerce. A certificate holder develops and maintains its food safety assurance programme based on the internationally accepted principles of ISO 22000 and HACCP.

Both Schemes are accredited by RvA, The Netherlands, which is one of the world renowned Accreditation Bodies and also by Sri Lanka accreditation Board (SLAB). Thus the certificates issued under these schemes are recognized all over the world HACCP or ISO 22000 certificates awarded from the SLSI implies that chemical, physical and biological hazards encountered during production or processing of the food item, as applicable to the scope of certification controlled to make the food safe for human consumption.

Energy Management Certification Scheme (ISO 50001)

Energy Management System is a series of processes that enables an organization to use data and information to maintain and improve energy performance, while improving operational efficiencies, decreasing energy intensity and reducing environmental impacts. It is applicable to all organizations regardless of type, size and product or service provided.

What is an Energy Management System?

Any management system is a set of interrelated or interacting elements set up to establish organization policy and objectives to achieve those objectives.

An energy management system is a series of processes that enables an organization to use data and information to maintain and improve energy performance, while improving operational efficiencies, decreasing energy intensity, and reducing environmental impacts.

What initial steps shall I take to establish an Energy Management System in my organization?

1. Purchase ISO 50001:2011 Standard

2. Take preparatory steps toward establishing an energy management system (EnMS)

3. Develop an Energy Policy that includes commitment to the EnMS from top management

4. Identify a Management Representative to lead implementation of the EnMS

5. Establish a team of representatives from major functional areas of the organization

6. Decide on the boundaries of the EnMS

7. Once prepared, take steps toward implementing an EnMS:

· Undertake an energy review to identify significant energy uses, their energy consumption, and opportunities for improvement

· Establish an energy baseline

· Identify energy performance indicators for tracking energy performance improvement against the baseline

8. Implement better procurement practices for energy-using equipment, systems, and processes

9. Develop Energy Manual and Procedures: A consultant, if hired, will undertake this work

10  Provide Training & Awareness to Staff

What should I submit to the SLSI for obtaining ISO 50001 Certification?

You should submit the following to the SLSI

1. Duly filled application obtained from the SLSI

2. A copy of the Energy Manual & records on Energy Review

What is the certification process implemented by the SLSI?

The steps of the certification process include the following;

1. Reviewing your application

2. Conducting adequacy audit on the energy manual submitted by you

3. Conducting Stage I assessment

4. Conducting Stage II assessment

5. Awarding certificates

6. Surveillance of your EnMS

How should the SLSI monitor my EnMS?

The certification cycle is 3 years. After awarding the certificate, two surveillance audits will be conducted annually (Free of charge) to ensure the following objectives.

1. Whether the EnMS of your organization is in compliance with the ISO 50001:2011 Standard requirements.

2. Whether the steps taken by your organization within a given year are effective to achieve energy targets specified by your organization.

3. To determine whether there is any room for improvement

At the end of the third year, the certificate expires and needs to be renewed.

Organic Certification Scheme

It assures that the food or other agricultural products are produced using methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as, pesticides & chemical Fertilizers, do not contain GMOs, not produced using irradiation, industrial solvents or chemical additives. As a management system which is in harmony with nature, organic Farming and fulfil consumer demands by placing emphasis on the safeguard of soil and water the enrichment of biodiversity and the responsible use of energy and natural resources.

  • Production, processing, handling, storage & transportation of organically produced agricultural products
  • Unprocessed  agricultural & livestock products
  • Processed agricultural & livestock products intended for human consumption containing one or more ingredients that are agricultural and / or livestock origin.
  • Feed stuff essentially intended for animal consumption
  • Agricultural & veterinary preparations that are intended for use in the production of organic material

Super Market Management Certification Scheme

This certification is granted based on SLS 1432:2011 (Reqiurements for Good Practices for Super Markets) and Super Market Management Certification Scheme certification enables super market operators to manage super market activities according to specific requirements of the standard and to avoid any contamination risks of food and beverages

Vegetarian Certification Scheme

Assures that measures have been taken on the use of vegetarian claims in food or beverage in its ingredients, storage, handling, processing, coking, displaying, serving and transportation.

Fees

1.    Stage I Audit Fee
Stage I audit fee is computed as LKR 2 500/= per auditor per one man-day.

2.    Stage II Audit Fee   
Stage II audit fee is computed as LKR 2 500/= per auditor per one man-day.

3.    Annual Registration fee

5.        All the above payments shall be accompanied with VAT + NBT 2% at the current rate.

6.        The client shall provide transport & accommodation for auditors.

COVID-19 SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM CERTIFICATION SCHEME (NEW)

COVID-19 SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR ORGANIZATIONS

The COVID-19 Safety Management Systems Certification Scheme is established for certifying organizations, which implement COVID-19 Safety Management Systems according to the requirements of SLS 1672: 2020 (Sri Lanka Standard specification for COVID-19 Safety Management Systems). The purpose of existence of a COVID -19 Safety Management System is to ensure that the stakeholders of an organization are safeguarded from any risk or threat due to potential exposure to COVID-19 through its activities, products, and services. The objective of implementing a COVID-19 Management System is to create an environment to ensure that any risk or threat due to COVID-19 is mitigated so that safety of the stakeholders of the organization is ensured/guaranteed. The COVID-19 Safety Management System assures safety of the human element of an organization, including the staff and visitors, through implementation of a risk management process, and it builds up confidence among the stakeholders in management and mitigation of the risks or threats adequately.
