TRAINING PROGRAMME ON QUALITY ASSURANCE PRACTICES FOR MANUFACTURING OF BOTTLED DRINKING WATER

August 15, 2024

Introduction

Sale of bottled water in the country has exploded in recent years, largely as a result of a public
perception of purity driven by advertisements and packaging labels featuring pristine glaciers and
crystal-clear mountain springs.
According to the law it is mandatory to obtain one of two registrations, namely for "bottled drinking
water'' or "bottled natural mineral water'' issued by the Ministry of Health in order to manufacture
and market these product.
The Sri Lanka Standards Institution also provides an additional independent certification scheme
which is not mandatory for the two definitions of bottled water namely SLS 894 for "bottled drinking
water" and SLS 1038 for "bottled natural mineral water''.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) works very closely with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI}
and has nominated SLSI to carry out all audits and analysis (micro biological and chemical) of source
water and finished product prior to a registration being issued to an Applicant. This programme is
designed to impart the knowledge on establishing premises for bottled drinking water.
