The necessity to determine the final product quality is one of the criteria that a consumer can use to select a good product from the market. In order to ensure that, a Product Certification Scheme known as the SLS Marks Scheme was introduced to recognize local entrepreneurs taking proper steps to improve quality of products. The Certification Mark on a commodity or product signifies that it is consistently manufactured in accordance with the relevant Sri Lanka Standard Specification and commodity or product could be purchased with assurance of quality. This scheme is very popular among the local industrialists as it gives a third party guarantee about the final product quality and now the SLS mark has gained a reputation as a “Symbol of Quality”. Furthermore SLSI implements a product certification scheme for overseas manufacturers and details of this scheme is almost same as the scheme for local manufacturers. This scheme facilitates overseas manufacturers to manufacture the products according to Sri Lanka Standards and export to Sri Lanka.
