Introduction
Compost is a widely used organic fertilizer throughout the world. It is being produced using a wide variety of source materials at household to commercial scale. With the increased population and changes in food consumption pattern, the amount of organic waste generated has increased. Composting is promoted as a developing of an environmentally friendly fertilizer and as a process that helps to reduce the volume of organic waste and recycle nutrients back to croplands.
The quality of compost has become a subjective due to the improper practices during the production, Producing good-quality compost, safe to human health and the environment at large scale has become a challenge to the industry.
Application Good Manufacturing Practices in compost manufacturing process ensures product quality as well as process efficiency and effectiveness.
Sri Lanka Standard, SLS 1654:2020, Code of practice for production of compost, provides guidance to the manufacturers to de their operations in efficient and effective manner and produce quality compost
